“History of Popocatepetl and Iztaccíhuatl”
Once upon a time, there was a Tlaxcala princess named Iztaccíhuatl who was struck by the handsome and warrior of her town, Popocatépetl, and the same thing happened to him. It was times of war between the Tlaxcalans and the Aztecs, but before leaving for the battle, Popocatepetl got ready and asked for the hand of that beautiful maiden, the father granted it to him on the condition that he return from the war safe and sound to be could marry his daughter.
They carried out what was agreed, while Princess Iztaccihuatl waited impatiently for her lover. However, it happened that a rival of Popocatepetl who was also in love with the young woman, deceived Izta by telling him that Popo had died in the war. Faced with such news, Izta’s pain was so great that it is said she died of sadness.

Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl
What is the surprise that a short time later Popocatepetl returned victorious from that fight, happy because he was going to get married, when they gave him the fatal news that his fiancée had died. Popo all he wanted was to honor the love they both had and what he came up with was to create a huge mountain to erect Izta’s tomb under the Sun. He placed the body of his beloved on the top of the mountain and he on his knees he watched over his eternal sleep with a torch in hand.
Eventually the snow covered both bodies until two mountains formed side by side. It is said that when Popocatepetl remembers his princess Iztaccíhuatl, he trembles and his torch is rekindled, for this reason, this volcano still continues to emit fumaroles of smoke.
