Origin of Huichol Art: Huichol art originates from an ancient tradition where Huichol shamans translate visions, induced by Peyote (hikuri) – their sacred cactus, into physical form. Each piece of art carries symbolic motifs and stories of the Huichol culture, as well as Huichol legends of their cosmogony, offering a unique insight into Huichol society.
These yarn paintings, also known as Huichol stamen tables, are multicolored depictions of the Huichol’s visions during rituals, their stories, and their religion. They are windows to the mystic universe of the deities deep in Mexico, through the perspective of the Huichol indigenous people.
Elaboration Technique: A Huichol artist begins by covering a board entirely with beeswax. One by one, threads of yarn are adhered to complete the painting, each one representing various symbols of their culture and traditions.
Maintenance: To prevent discoloration of the threads, do not expose this piece to direct heat or light, which may melt the Campeche wax adhesive (beeswax). Cleaning should only be done with a delicate brush or air.
Important Note: As all paintings are handmade, slight variations from the shown images may occur.
